ELDErs AT ICC

Island Community Church is led by a team (plurality) of elders referred to as the “Elder Team,” composed of both paid (referred to as “staff pastors”) and unpaid (referred to as “lay elders”) elders. The New Testament describes multiple elders leading each individual church (Acts 14:23, 15:4, 20:17, Phil. 1:1, Titus 1:5, 1 Peter 5:1, James 5:14). The elders are equal in authority but organizationally led by the Lead Pastor.

How Elders serve

The team of elders work together to serve the church in the following ways:

  • Prayer: intentional intercession for the body (Acts 6:4, James 5:14)
  • Shepherding: relational care for the body (1 Peter 5:1-4, Acts 20:28)
  • Teaching and Discipleship: maturing the body (1 Tim. 3:2, 2 Tim. 4:2, 1 Tim. 4:13,
  • Titus 1:9)
  • Spiritual Oversight: protection of the body (Acts 15:6, Acts 20:17,28-31, 2 Timothy
  • 3:13-17)
  • Leadership of the church: governance of the body (1 Timothy 5:17, Titus 1:7)

Selection of elders

The selection of Lay Elders currently involves an Elder Selection Team comprised of leaders that include both male and female members of the church. This team, appointed by the Elders, receives recommendations for new Elders from the church membership throughout the year. As led by the Holy Spirit, the Elder Selection Team will assess nominees (sometimes requiring additional interviews or written statements) and then present qualified nominees  to the current Elder Team. Elder candidates must then be approved by the Elder Team. Such candidates are then presented to the Church at an ICC Family Meeting, where they may be affirmed the members in attendance. Affirmed Elders will then receive a date for installation. Upon installation, they will begin their first term of service.
